Better surveys.

We've been at the forefront of online research for over a decade and breaking new ground from day one: migrating established research products online, giving bigger agencies a leg-up, and creating new models of data capture.
We’ve always used the best survey software, Confirmit®, and our expertise helped us be the first to create online patient diaries. Today, our focus is on leading the drive for truly mobile compatible surveys, that people can actually enjoy completing.

Participants first.

Market research has a crisis. Participant goodwill is faltering, and bad online surveys are in large part to blame. We are putting this right by insisting on participant-friendly designs and leading on industry-wide initiatives.
Motivating people to participate is, in our view, the single biggest challenge facing market research. We were the first to raise this issue in healthcare and our MD, John Aitchison, authored the BHBIA's influential 2017 response rate task force report.

Evidence-led.

All our surveys passively capture data about how participants complete, which we analyse and report back to our clients and peers, making informed suggestions about how to improve the quality of design and fieldwork processes.
We strive to produce better data for our clients. What we learn is fed back into our survey templates, so we can continually improve the participant experience, how we ask questions, and survey compatibility.

Healthcare experts.

Several of us worked with Astra and with Zeneca, and pre-date Novartis. Since then, we’ve researched 1990’s blockbusters as well as today’s gene-based cancer immunotherapies. Oncology is a specialty, as are post-launch brand trackers.
We work with everyone, from big pharma to independent consultants. Many of our projects relate to the post-launch life of prescription medicines, whether undertaken in partnership with agencies, or directly with the brand teams.

Scientific people.

Narrative has its place, but at First Line we don’t get carried away with it. We study behavioural and brain science, reflect and experiment with the most relevant ideas, then transform the best into market research technique and practice.
Over the last ten years, First Line has developed an innovative portfolio of behaviourally inspired online market research techniques. They make great survey ingredients: we take them off the shelf, mix them up according to your objectives, and hey presto.

Research wisdom.

Our average age is forty-something. Who cares? With experience comes know-how! The chances are we’ll have worked on a similar business problem before, or programmed something just as tricky as the potential solution in your mind's eye.
We don't do half-baked. Commission us and we'll take all the time your project needs. With ~15 years market research experience per team member we have deep wells of knowledge in research design, programming, data analysis, and project management.

Original thinking.

We enjoy thinking. We like introducing new ideas to our peer group, and we're happy that colleagues pick our brains on what new approach might help differentiate their proposal, or how best to ask their online quant questions.
Original thinking can sometimes be disruptive. We’ve ruffled feathers by working with a futurologist; introduced behavioural economics to an initially skeptical pharma community; and called out the escalating response rate crisis.

We started entering our industry’s business intelligence awards, the BOBIs, in 2014 and have been winners or finalists every year since. It’s a great way of fostering collaboration with clients and maintaining our pioneering reputation.

John Aitchison

Managing Director

I established First Line Research in January 2004, having started in market research in 1995. I study behavioural science and apply it to online market research practice. I lead on all design and delivery and am always looking out for new approaches and developments. I am a Certified Member of the MRS.

Programming & Technology 

I joined First Line in 2006 from the Financial Services sector with 11 years of experience across programming, and marketing. I lead on all things technical, ensuring that First Line remains at the forefront of online research design and delivery.

Mark Wills

I started my career in banking analysis, joining First Line in 2007 following several years as a freelancer and many years at TNS as lead data analysis on international patient diary studies. I’m a computing and statistics graduate and experienced IBM SPSS™ user, leading on all aspects of data processing and delivery.

I joined First Line in June 2010 from a background in clinical research and laboratory-based quality management. I have managed pharmaceutical and medical device clinical trials for (amongst others) Pfizer and Smith & Nephew, and latterly held senior quality management roles in the biotech industry.
